The Ozone layer is healing

Our ozone layer for has been troubled, it’s finally recovering, according to a new assessment released on Wednesday. The laudable global effort to phase out the use of ozone-depleting substances, showing us what political determination can achieve. besides the use of ozone-depleting substances, displaying us what political determination can achieve. About 300 scientists from 36 countries contributed to the detailed report, which was published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

The Ozone layer started to decline during the 1980’s and in 1985 scientist spotted a seasonal hole over Antarctica. This made governments to start taking actions to prevent more damage. It’s known that gases like CFC’S and halons can accelerate the depletion of ozone in the Earth’s stratosphere, so scientists and politicians across the globe were trying to come with ideas to prevent further damage. Almost 200 countries signed the Montreal Protocol which was designed to phase out the use of ozone-depleting substances in 1987.

The ozone declined throughout the early 1990s, but has stayed the same throughout the 2000’s. Due to the significant decrease in the atmospheric abundance of ozone-depleting gases, it is finally showing signs of promising recovery.  If this all continues to decrease then it is predicted that the ozone layer above the mid-latitudes and Arctic will recover to 1980 lvels before 2050. The hole above Antarctica will take longer to heal. “International action on the ozone layer is a major environmental success story,” WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud said in a news release. “This should encourage us to display the same level of urgency and unity to tackle the even greater challenge of climate change.”
